A milestone age, a younger look? The rise of 'beauty tourism' or treatments nearer home are no longer just for celebrities

Glamorous great-gran Marie Sutherland had no qualms about celebrating another birthday earlier this month. At 73, she looks younger now than she did years ago, after turning back the clock during a recent trip to Poland. When good genes and face creams could no longer be relied upon to keep the wrinkles at bay, Marie resorted to cosmetic surgery. And she hasn't looked back since her decision to spend £4,500 of her savings on a facelift and lower eye bag removal. "I want to look good for my great-grandson's wedding," declares the former part-time cleaner from Croydon. As he's only a year old, she knows she's in for quite a wait. Marie says: "I used to be a hairdresser and I've always cared about my appearance. I've never gone out of the door without make-up and I still weigh myself every week to stay size 12 to 14. "Around my 70th birthday, I looked in the mirror and realised I had nasty wrinkles and crinkled skin like an elephant's. Suddenly, I was starting to look like an old lady. At my age, you do begin to wonder how long you've got left." Despite reassurances from husband Thomas and her three daughters that she didn't need surgery, Marie began surfing the internet. On November 5 she flew out to the Euromedica Clinic in Poland, where her cosmetic surgery was carried out under local, rather than general, anaesthetic because of her high blood pressure. Marie is delighted with her new look - especially when her eldest daughter Janet (52) complains that she's looking younger than her!
