Arm Reduction Surgery |
|
What is Arm Reduction?
Arm reduction operation is particularly beneficial for women who have gained and lost weight repeatedly, a cycle that causes the skin to lose its elasticity.
Liposuction is not an ideal treatment for so called "bat wings" because it leaves a floppy empty bag of skin that can make a patient look worse than before the operation. Surgery which can reduce the upper arm is the most appropriate procedure. The only problem with an arm reduction is that it leaves a visible scar, because the surgeon cuts down the length of the inside upper arm, from armpit to elbow, to remove a lemon slice of skin and fat.
Preparation
Patients are advised to take zinc and magnesium for at least one month before the operation to aid the healing process. Aspirin interferes with blood clotting and must not be taken two weeks prior to the operation (many painkillers contain aspirin). Smokers should stop smoking 2 weeks before and for at least a week after the operation. |

What happens during Arm Reduction?
The operation is carried out under light general anaesthetic administered intravenously. The length of time before the obvious signs of surgery disappear is between six months and a year, but there will be slightly visible permanent scarring that in time should fade.
The result of the operation is permanent.
Aftercare
You will have exactly the same aftercare as the patients who undergo other procedures, i.e. you will stay one night in a private room in a hospital and receive everyday checks to assess your progress. Stitches will be removed gradually, at first every third, then every second stitch, etc. All stitches will be out by the twelfth day following the operation.
After the operation you will stay overnight in a private hospital room with round the clock care. You will have tight bandages and drains that will be removed the following day.
After your operation you will be advised to sleep with your arms supported.
Remember to keep taking vitamins everyday, especially Vitamin C, to promote healing. Some pain is usual after the operation, but it is controllable by simple painkillers. |
